The artifical alteration of a living thing's genotype. In genetic engineering, scientists deliberately change genotypes by moving genes from one organism to another. By doing this, genetic engineers can give an organism characteristics that it does not normally have. Genetically engineered bacteria can be used to make substances such as human hormones.
